A smart phone this cheap, Rs 251 (less than $4) could help re-shape how financial services are delivered in emerging markets. It may however be too good to be true as rumors of it being a sham circulate online.
Freedom 251, touted as India’s most affordable smartphone, has launched in India today. As the name suggests, this ultra-affordable 3G smartphone is priced at only Rs 251. Noida-based Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd is the company behind this smartphone, and it says that this new smartphone is in line with the Indian government’s Make in India, Digital India and Skill India programs. Booking for this smartphone starts tomorrow at 6:00AM, and the window will be open till February 21, 8:00PM. The Freedom 251 is currently listed on the company’s website, but there is an event in New Delhi scheduled for today evening, where Union Defence Minister Sri Manohar Parrikar will launch the India’s most affordable smartphone.
