Roman Storm, co-founder of the crypto mixer Tornado Cash, was convicted on one charge in a landmark case that tested the legal limits of open-source crypto software.
In a bid to demonstrate that Storm knew he was facilitating money laundering, prosecutors showed a photo of him wearing a Tornado Cash-themed T-shirt with a stylized drawing of a washing machine. “Do you wanna know how to stay anonymous on Ethereum? Ask me!” the shirt read. Ethereum is a popular blockchain platform used to transmit digital funds and create various kinds of decentralized financial apps. Storm’s lawyers said the T-shirt was intended to be humorous, disputing that it was a sign of criminal intent. “At trial, we were able to prove that the T-shirt was worn by Roman at a conference in Boston where Tornado Cash won an award and was meant to be a joke,” Klein said.
