MIT finds 95% of gen AI pilots fail because companies avoid friction

A new MIT study reveals that billions of dollars invested in enterprise gen AI pilots are yielding no results. Only 5% of custom gen AI tools survive the pilot-to-production cliff. 

“Pilots stall because most tools cannot retain feedback, adapt to context, or improve over time,” said the authors of the MIT State of AI in Business 2025.
