Picked up by Jason Del Ray at Re/Code, Twitter has started to sell sports tickets - a logical fit according to Jason because of the large followings professional teams have on the social network.
You can buy directly from a tweet, with fans selecting ticket quantity and paying with a credit card - all without leaving Twitter.
Putting aside how ridiculous it is that the best team in the Eastern Conference hasn’t sold out its playoff games, the move points toward one area of e-commerce where Twitter could break through. Loyal sports fans use Twitter regularly to get news about their favorite teams and read live commentary during big games. Those characteristics could make Twitter a go-to distribution channel for last-minute ticket offers just like the Hawks promotion, as well as giving teams an alternative to working with ticketing middlemen.
