The European Investment Fund (EIF), the EU agency that backs many first time European VC funds, has now effectively turned off the tap to new British commitments. One UK VC commented "The strong suspicion is that it's related to Brexit"
Simon Murdoch, a partner at Episode1 Ventures, told Politico: “We were continuing the process with the European Investment Fund until Article 50 was triggered, but then they stopped the talks. The strong suspicion was that it was related to Brexit.” Rory Stirling, a partner in BGF Ventures, told The Times it was clear that the EIF had pulled down the shutters. “The conclusion we have come to is that it really is having an impact. After the Brexit vote we were told it would have no impact but that all changed after Article 50. While they’re not saying ‘no’ officially, the clear message is that they are closed for business. They are doing eternal due diligence.”
