Courtesy of Alibaba, all you now need to get a chicken burger in one Chinese branch of KFC is a smile. The restaurant has adopted facial recognition technology that allows diners to pay with their face.
The founder of the technology giant Alibaba, the billionaire Jack Ma, boasted two years ago that his company would soon launch “smile-to-pay” systems, and now in the KFC close to the company’s Hangzhou headquarters, customers can leave their loose change and credit cards at home. They simply smile at a scanner and click “confirm” on a keypad. Payment is then taken from a cash account which is unlocked when a person’s image matches a previously stored photo.
