As the OCC explores creating a fintech charter, the acting comptroller has described the process as "dating." The OCC continues to meet with fintech companies to better understand their needs and educate them about the laws and regulations within the industry.
Joseph Otting, former CEO of OneWest Bank, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to take over as permanent comptroller for the agency. If Otting is confirmed by the Senate, it's unknown what his plans are for fintech. But Noreika pointed out, "Somebody like Mr. Otting who has been in the banking industry his whole life can't help but appreciate the dynamic nature of the banking industry. You can't ignore the changing nature of technology and the banking industry. Even if he weren't so inclined, I don't think he could ignore it." Noreika thinks that Otting is "very well suited given his background to really take this to the next level," adding that "there will continue to be new levels because that's the nature of innovation."
