“At LearnVest I saw six to seven million people get a financial plan and maybe 10% execute it. Why is that?” the 39-year-old Orum CEO says. “It's because there’s so much friction in our financial system. People don't want to put money in high-yield savings, even though it's a better rate, because they're afraid that if they have an emergency, they can't get it out fast enough. I became obsessed with that problem.” Von Tobel was Kirkpatrick’s first backer, investing through her VC firm Inspired Capital. “This is a massive, complicated, meaty problem that plagues thousands of institutions,” von Tobel says.
