Reinsurers have laid out the multibillion-dollar cost of the recent spate of storms, wildfires and other natural catastrophes, just days before crucial talks with customers on the price of cover for next year.
The heaviest costs came from Typhoon Jebi, which swept through Japan in September and was the strongest typhoon to hit the country in 25 years, and Hurricane Florence, which caused widespread damage in north and South Carolina in the US later that month. The Carr wildfire in California and a windstorm in Ontario also proved costly for the Swiss group. Swiss Re said that the losses were “large for an individual quarter” but that its figures for the first nine months of the year were in line with expectations.
