IRS Commissioner to Quit as Trump Takes Office

Werfel’s decision to quit on Inauguration Day sidesteps a looming confrontation between the tax agency chief and the incoming administration. He said that he hoped the new administration would maintain the agency’s momentum in reducing telephone wait times, adding digital services like document uploads from taxpayers and upgrading aged technology.

“I had to recognize that the incoming team wanted to go in a new direction,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel.
