In San Francisco, a University of California laboratory also suffered a “ransomware” attack. The hackers froze its systems — systems that were supporting the search for a cure for Covid-19 — and demanded payment. The laboratory did hand over a ransom of 116.4 bitcoins ($1.14m) because “the data that was encrypted is important to some of the academic work we pursue as a university serving the public good”, it told the BBC.
