In an effort to unseat PayPal Barclays has struck a deal with the payments tech firm Verifone to enable faster mobile payments across 20,000 UK retailers.
The development is a sign that Barclays is striving to stay ahead of the pack in the lucrative payments sector in an attempt to protect revenues. About a quarter of people who try to buy products on their phones have had transactions fail, while 55 per cent of UK smartphone owners admit to abandoning a transaction, according to research by Jumio, an identity management company. Ashok Vaswani, chief executive of Barclays Personal and Corporate Banking, said the aim was to “end the frustration” caused by mobile checkout failure, partly because of the cumbersome process of entering long card numbers.
