The boss of Robinhood hailed efforts by the UK government to encourage more people to invest as the trading app unveiled its long-awaited launch in Britain. The app will initially offer trading in US stocks, although Robinhood aims to broaden its product offering in the UK to include trading in London-listed shares and Isas.
Changes unveiled by Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, in his autumn statement last week to broaden the types of investments that can be put in Isas to include fractional shares were “super-interesting”, Tenev said. “I think legitimately there’s a desire to have more Brits investing.” Hunt is seeking to champion the City and to encourage domestic investment amid worries in government and the Square Mile that London’s capital markets are losing business to rival financial centres, such as New York.
